A call for peace in Ukraine

The meaningless war that the Russian Federation has launched against Ukraine is a severe violation of international law and human rights and has put many people in a very difficult situation. NSR supports and agrees with all demands, like the ones from the UN and many states, and calls for an immediate end to the violence. NSR stands in solidarity with everyone who are impacted by this war, first and foremost the people directly affected, but also everyone who is indirectly affected by it.

The Sámi homeland reaches over four different states, the northern parts of Finland, Russia, Norway, and Sweden. The Sámi people have inhabited these lands long before the boundaries between the states were drawn. We support our Sámi sisters and brothers on the Russian side of the borders. It is important that our collaboration across the borders can continue and be strengthened despite rising tensions between the states.

NSR is working for Indigenous Peoples and minorities’ rights and wants to contribute and participate in peace work worldwide. International law has decisive meaning for the interests of Indigenous Peoples and minorities. The Sámis have the right to fully utilize human rights and freedom that the international community has agreed upon in the UN system, such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and other regulations and agreements.
